It is basic and functional accommodation suited to those who want to spend time outdoors exploring the Peak District.
Originally, the bunkhouse was a mid-19th Century Grade II listed former chapel, complete with choir stalls, pulpit and school room. After lying derelict for 15 years, it was bought and converted to residential use in 1975 by the Wheldon School PTA in conjunction with the Harpur Crewe Estate. The building became known as the ‘Michael Hutchinson Residential Centre’ after the head teacher who led the partnership of parents, teachers and pupils, whose dedicated efforts have left a priceless legacy for all to enjoy for decades to come.
Since it opened, thousands of youngsters have stayed at Hollinsclough. Each year, many more students, staff and other groups stay here. All youngsters from Wheldon School have the opportunity to go for half a week early in their time at school and many departments make use of the building for visits, field trips and other activities. Wheldon is very fortunate to have such an excellent facility and we are hoping to develop the building even further in the future.
In 1985 the building, then known as the Michael Hutchinson Residential Centre after the head teacher who led the partnership of parents, teachers and pupils, was bought outright by the PTA on behalf of the school.
